Katie Leahul is a self-taught artist who resides in Calgary, Alberta with her husband and two sons. She has been painting and creating for over 20 years.
Katie’s earliest work draws on inspiration from Picasso, Braque, and the Cubist movement. Her unique geometric style has been described by others as a cubism revival.
Working primarily in acrylic on canvas, her process involves extensive layering of colour and lines. Her subject matter often evokes a feeling of nostalgia from choice of subject matter to colour palate. Her work asks the question, what are the moments that define us? and expresses the emotions we feel behind these references.
Katie’s passion for artistry, and love of colour and line inspires her to create spirited paintings with an underlying esoteric structure. Her brush strokes and palate knife work is a mix of controlled and structured movements combined with loose gestural sweeps of paint where she allows the paint and lines to control and direct the painter.
“Painting has never been a hobby for me. I paint because I have to. It is where I am at peace and living out my truth.”
